The Role And Classification Of Nursing Pads

The function and classification of Nursing Pads

The function of Nursing Pads

  • Strong Absorbency: It is best to choose nursing pads with four water-locking channels. Ordinary nursing pads on the market typically have three water-locking channels, but those with four channels have stronger absorbency and are less prone to leakage.
  • Ensure Softness and Comfort: Good nursing pads will keep the breast area dry after absorbing the leaked breast milk without irritating the breasts.
  • Equipped with Two Non-slip Adhesive Strips: This makes it easier to stick the pad to the bra, preventing it from falling off due to excess milk absorption, which could cause embarrassment. Many nursing pads only have one non-slip adhesive strip.
  • Ultra-thin, Individually Wrapped Non-woven Fabric: Safe, hygienic, and convenient to carry. Many nursing pads use plastic packaging, which is neither hygienic nor environmentally friendly.
  • It is best to choose disposable nursing pads. There are many reusable cotton nursing pads available on the market, but it is advisable not to opt for these. Firstly, reusable nursing pads have poor absorbency and may not effectively prevent leakage. Secondly, breast milk is rich in nutrients, and if it stays on the pad for too long, bacteria can easily breed. These bacteria can cling to the pad, and many of them cannot be eliminated through washing. Using the pad again could lead to breast infection and transmit bacteria to the baby.

Classification by Usage Method

1. Washable:

  • Advantages: Mostly made of cotton and other natural fabrics, comfortable and breathable, can be used multiple times, cost-effective.
  • Disadvantages: Need to be washed promptly, and milk stains are not very easy to clean, which can lead to bacterial growth.

2. Disposable:

  • Advantages: Lightweight and compact, with adhesive backing to stay in place, convenient to use and carry, single-use without the need for washing.
  • Disadvantages: Needs to be replaced several times a day, making it relatively costly. Mothers with sensitive skin may be allergic to certain materials.
